My view of a soldier

January 11, 2012

Soldiers are not comfortable in “civilized society”. The were not created to merely live. They are Warriors, Gods among men, living on the fringe somewhere between duty and honor, waiting to be called to battle again. ~T. Shang – Project 365 Vets

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” ~Heraclitus

Thank you for all you’ve brought back, brother warrior.
    Peace & grace,

Reblogged this on fromevansridge and commented:
“The nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools” Spartan king, quoted by Thecydides from What It Is Like To Go To War, Karl Marlantes

Ah, the call of the wild, the stirring of the wind, the voice calling to duty and to action.

I think this is dangerous imagery. It is seductive, like the heros in Shane or A History Of Violence –

I wonder whether I am reading fromevansbridge’s comment corectly? It seems to me to be a rebuttal to the self-delusional comment that warriors are a race apart.

On the contrary, Mr. Bennett, I can assure you my comment was not a rebuttal, but an affirmation of the exceptionalism of our Veterans and our active duty personnel and their families.

Very true. One could argue that the great minds have also had difficulty fitting into civilized society. Perhaps someday a generation will come along that has learned to cultivate a warriors heart with a scholars mind, and there will be peace.

With my Norse heritage, I like to think of them as Sagamen, the free warriors of our early history.
